Even in trying times of economic strife, many people still dream of becoming their own employer and starting a home-based business.
The most famous and most recent example of a successful business that started with an idea is Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook. He came up with an idea, and that idea turned into a billion dollar enterprise.
After seeing the movie, The Social Network, many people leaving the theatre asked, “Why can’t I come up with an idea like that?”
The buying public is a fickle bunch and there is no telling what they will buy at any given moment.
However, retail workers can tell you that people will, and do, buy anything.
Sometimes you simply have to figure out what you have to sell that people will buy.
Creative people have an advantage over others, when it comes to starting a business.
If you can paint, draw, write, sew, or cook good enough that others are constantly admiring your talent, you could consider starting a business around that talent.
Besides actually creating things for people to buy, you could offer to teach others how to do what it is that comes natural to you, by offering instructional lessons.
There are two important components to a successful home-based business. One is selling something you know about, and the other is selling what you know to the right people.
Here is a list of a few ideas for turning what you know into a home-based business:
•Child-rearing (daycare, tutoring)
•Cooking (baked goods, recipe books)
•Sewing (tailoring, sewing lessons)
•Art (artwork, art lessons)
•Dog owner (dog walking, dog waste removal, dog sitting)
•Writing (greeting cards, posters, plaques)
Show what you can do to your friends, and see if they will buy something from you.
Once they are satisfied, encourage them to spread the word about your business.
You just might become the next Mark Zuckerberg.
